Tour Details

Dolpo, situated in the remote northwest of Nepal, is nestled between the Tibetan Plateau and the Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The Upper Dolpo trek, as the name suggests, covers the higher reaches of this region, an even more secluded and seldom-visited area. Only accessible to travelers since the late 1980s, Upper Dolpo remains a restricted zone, necessitating a special permit.

You might find familiarity in the mention of Phoksundo Lake, Shey Gompa, Bon Po practitioners, Buddhist monasteries, views of Dhaulagiri, and the enigmatic Crystal Mountain – a peak adorned with quartz and marine fossils. These landmarks have gained recognition through Peter Matthiessen’s book “The Snow Leopard” and Eric Valli’s cinematic portrayal of Dolpo life in ‘Himalaya’.

While Dolpo is typically characterized by its arid, stark landscape, it is crisscrossed with swiftly flowing rivers, thundering waterfalls, deep ravines, verdant meadows, and valleys of cultivated fields. Remote villages with unique cultural practices, including the Bon Po religion, along with the captivating allure of Phoksundo Lake, add to the region’s appeal. Given that a portion of Dolpo falls within the confines of the Shey Phoksundo National Park, its wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, rare Himalayan blue sheep, goral, thar, and Himalayan black bear, enjoy protection.

This three-week trek is not for the faint of heart, as the trails are challenging, often high, steep, unstable, and occasionally barely discernible. Extended days of trekking at significant altitudes are par for the course, with numerous high mountain passes to traverse. However, for those possessing the necessary stamina, physical conditioning, and unwavering determination, this trek promises to be a truly once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Here are the key highlights of the Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek:

1. Trace the Paths of Ancient Trans-Himalayan Traders
– Immerse yourself in the historical trade routes of the trans-Himalayan traders, connecting with centuries-old routes.

2. Dry Weather Exploration
– Enjoy your trek in a dry climate, free from concerns about rain, allowing for an uninterrupted adventure.

3. Spectacular Sites
– Experience the wonder of Phoksundo Lake, Crystal Mountain, and breathtaking views of Dhaulagiri, creating unforgettable memories.

4. Diverse Flora and Fauna
– Encounter a rich array of plant and animal life within the confines of the Shey Phoksundo National Park, offering a unique ecological experience.

5. Cultural Immersion in Bon Buddhism
– Gain valuable insights into the daily life and spiritual practices of Bon Buddhism practitioners, delving into a distinctive and ancient tradition.
